πŸ“ˆ Over time

The news over time

Everything we've read since Oct 2, all at once: 316,763 front-page headlines on one map, how newsy each hour was, which stories people kept telling, what the news made us feel and the running stories that lasted. Point at anything for the details; times are Eastern.

🌌 The headline galaxy

every headline we've read, near the ones that say similar things

all of it

πŸ” Loading 316,763 headlines…

Each dot is one headline, 316,763 in all. A computer reads each one and turns it into a list of numbers for what it says; headlines with similar numbers sit close together, so bright knots are many headlines on one thing. The colors are eight rough topics the computer found on its own, named by the words most typical of them. Labels mark the big running stories (🧡) and stories whose headlines sit together. Point at or tap a dot for its headline; drag to move; pinch, ctrl + scroll or the + and βˆ’ buttons to zoom. Press ▢️ to watch the weeks go by. The map is laid out again once a week (last on 2026-11-05); new headlines join it every hour.

πŸ“ˆ Newsiness

how much of the news its biggest story took, every hour

Each hour's news-day score: the share of the outlets with a story on their front page that carry the hour's biggest story, counting a story for less once it's old (0.5: half of them). From 0.45 the front page calls it a big news day 🚨. Dashed: worked out afterwards from what we'd saved; solid: kept by each hour's build. Each dot is a story's highest hour above the big line, labelled with the story where there's room; tap a label for its story. Hour by hour for the past week: πŸ—„οΈ the archive.

🧢 Motif tides

when the stories people tell came in and went out

Claims filed under each motif, day by day: the 12 motifs told most in any one week, from shows, people online and fact-checkers. A claim told under two motifs counts for both. The top row, on its own scale, is every claim filed under the 1263 motifs a person has checked; the motifs' rows share one scale, each with its biggest day named at the right (β–²) and outlined. A story people tell, never a claim that it's true.

😱 Feelings over time

what the news was likely to make us feel, day by day

Each day's news headlines by the feelings they're likely to stir, as our local language model reads them: each headline's one vote split across up to three feelings (3:2:1), the day's votes stacked to 100%. β€œOne by one” draws each feeling's share on a scale of its own, from its lowest day to its highest, the dashed line its usual (middle) day, so small swings show. A day with fewer than 200 news headlines read (our first evening) is left out. Pins mark the days a feeling ran furthest above its usual share, with that day's biggest story among the headlines it led. More on 😱 the emotions page.

🧡 Saga lifelines

the running stories with the most headlines, from first to last

Each line is one of the biggest sagas: a running story told in parts. Its thickness shows how many of its headlines we first saw that day, all on one scale (drawn by the square root, so a quiet day still shows beside a huge one), its biggest day named at the right (β–²) and outlined. Our records start on Oct 2: a saga seen then may have begun earlier.
