πŸ—ΊοΈ The outlet map

Every outlet we read on enough of our stories, placed by which stories it covers: outlets close together run the same stories. Each dot is in the outlet's AllSides lean color, white when it isn't rated. The second view places them by how they word them: how close their stories and words are to the AP's and Reuters', and how heated their headlines are.

πŸ’‘ The first axis isn't left against right. Across, it runs from business, tech and world news to the political fight, and the partisan outlets of both sides sit together at the fight's end: they cover the same fight. Left and right part on the second axis: crime and immigration stories at the bottom, stories critical of Trump at the top.

75 outlets with at least 20 of our stories and 100 headlines in the 28 days to Oct 28, 1 PM ET. Placed by which of 995 stories each ran (stories at least three of them ran), by correspondence analysis. The two axes hold 5.9% and 4.6% of the differences, so outlets close together here can still differ in other ways. Which way each axis points is set by the lean ratings: the end where outlets rated far left or far right gather is to the right, the end where left-rated ones gather is up. The ratings only point the axes; they place no one.

🏷️ Outlet types

Outlets sorted into types by what they do on their front pages: which stories they run, when, beside whom, how close to the wires, how their headlines are worded, how often they rewrite them, about fifty measures in all, and none of them a rating. Outlets sit on a continuum more than in islands, so a type is shown only when it holds together: when we leave out a fifth of the outlets at random and sort them again, it comes back at least three-quarters the same. The finer types outside the partisan webs don't, so those outlets carry only the broad family, named for what it isn't. An outlet is given a type only when at least two of the three outlets it behaves most like share it, and a type named for a side only when it's rated on that side or not rated.
